BISSO MARINE is proud to announce that Taylor King is the winner of the annual BISSO MARINE Safety Award Drawing. King was selected from a pool of 220 eligible employees.

To be eligible for the drawing, an employee must be employed by the company for the entire calendar year without having had an accident, safety infraction, negative performance review or disciplinary write-up. King was given the choice of selecting a Mako 1901 bay boat, a Nitro Z-7 bass boat or a Toyota Tundra double cab pickup truck.

King, a crane operator on the D/B BISSO 350, has been a valuable member of the BISSO MARINE team since 2006.

“I am extremely proud to present this award to Taylor and am equally proud of all BISSO MARINE employees,” said President and CEO W.A. “Beau” Bisso IV. “As a company, BISSO MARINE has worked very hard to continue raising the safety standards and expectations bar.”

That hard work resulted in a 58 percent reduction in BISSO MARINE’s 2009 Total Recordable Incident Rate. The TRIR in 2008 was 1.17 and was reduced to 0.494 in 2009.

Continuing education in our dedicated orientation and training room.

Having been in business in since 1890, BISSO MARINE learned long ago that nothing we do is more important than the safety of our people and the environment. With safety as our guiding principle, BISSO MARINE will not take a job unless we believe it can be performed safely. From job screening, to job planning, to job execution, we carefully consider the impact our work will have on our people and the environment. Our team of engineers, project managers, superintendents, foremen, and laborers work hand-in-hand with our Health, Safety, Security and Environment Department to make each job a safe one. At BISSO MARINE, every employee is truly a member of our safety department.

We employ an aggressive behavioral based safety program that stresses the importance of thinking before acting. Our safety program begins at the hiring phase; we will not hire an employee unless he or she has significant experience and has demonstrated a commitment to safety. After carefully screening prospective employees, we immediately indoctrinate our people in the BISSO MARINE culture of safety. New employees undergo rigorous safety training “in the classroom” before being sent to the field. At hire, all employees go through an orientation program that covers:

• General Safety Training in the major OSHA disciplines
• Drug and Alcohol Awareness for both the employee and supervisor
• Marine Fire Response
• Emergency Procedures and Emergency Action Plan
• Employee Safety Plan
• Incident reporting instructions
• Conformance With Polices and Regulations
• Personal Protection Equipment

Each new employee is assigned a mentor for additional training and supervision in the field. New employees are required to wear a “high-visibility orange" hardhat during the first six months of employment to alert co-workers that the employee is still in training. Through our in-house safety trainer and our outside safety consultants, our employees undergo comprehensive safety training on a regular basis. Our training program includes:

• OSHA Super Session – (two day training in all OSHA required topics)
• STCW and Bridge Simulator Training (for all USCG license holders)
• Near Miss Training (all employees)
• Forklift and Crane Certifications (for operators)
• First Aid and CPR (available to all employees)
• Rigging Certification (for on-deck personnel and divers)
• Confined Space Awareness (all employees)
• Confined Space Entry Certification (for testing prior to entering)
• HAZWOPER Awareness Training (all employees)
• Driving Safety (for employees with access to a company vehicle)
• Fire Watch (all employees)
• Advanced Firefighting (all field employees)
• Behavior Based Safety training (all employees)

Customized offshore and classroom training is provided by safety consultants and our in-house safety department.

In recognition of the fact that safe workers are drug-free workers, BISSO MARINE is also on the cutting edge with respect to drug testing. Our drug policy is simple – zero tolerance. Every prospective employee undergoes a thorough background check and is given a pre-employment drug test. Each of our vessels and facilities is subject to random drug testing each quarter. In addition to random tests, we utilize post-accident, “probable cause,” and Pipeline Testing Consortium (DOT) drug testing to insure a truly drug free work force. We also perform frequent bag and room searches and regularly employ drug detecting dogs to keep our vessels and facilities drug free.

BISSO MARINE is committed to working safely. In 2008 BISSO MARINE implemented a new Safety Awards Program to reinforce the company’s absolute commitment to safety. In addition to awarding quarterly individual and team incentives for safe work, each January BISSO MARINE randomly selects one employee who worked the previous year without having had an OSHA recordable incident, a disciplinary write-up, or a negative performance review. The winner receives his or her choice of a Mako 1901 inshore Bay Boat with 150HP outboard engine, a Nitro Z-7 ( 18 ½ feet) Bass Boat with 150HP outboard engine, a Toyota Tundra Double Cab pickup truck with 4.7 liter V8 engine, or the cash equivalent. BISSO MARINE does not just talk safety, it backs up that talk with a financial commitment to the safety of its people and the environment.
